Understanding Object-Oriented Programming in JavaScript
What Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) means?
Object-oriented programming (OOP) is a programming style used to organize code using objects. Object is a thing that contains data (properties) and actions (methods). Instead of writing everything as separate instructions, OOP groups related information together. This makes the program easier to understand, reuse, and manage. In OOP, we create objects that represent real-world things like a car, student, or game character. Each object can store its own data and perform its own actions. JavaScript supports OOP, which helps developers write cleaner and more structured programs when creating applications, games, or websites.
Real-world analogy (blueprint → objects)
A good way to understand OOP is to take the example of blueprints and a house. A blueprint is a design or plan that shows how a house should be built. Many houses can be built from one blueprint. Each house will have the same design but may have different colors, furniture, or owners. In programming, blueprints are called classes and houses made from them are called objects. Classes define structure and behavior, while objects are the actual working instances used in the program.
What is a class in JavaScript ?
A class in JavaScript is a template that is used to create an object. It defines the properties (data) and methods (functions) that objects will have. Classes help organize code and make it easier to create multiple objects with the same structure. Instead of writing the same code again and again, a class allows developers to reuse designs. For example, if we create a class called "Player", it might include properties like name and score and methods like play() or jump(). Every object created from this class will follow the same structure.
Creating objects using classes
Objects are created from classes so that they can be used in a program. When a class is defined, it acts like a template. From that template, we can create multiple objects that share the same properties and methods. Each object represents an actual instance of that class. For example, if there is a class called "Student", objects could represent different students like Rahul, Ayesha or Aman. Even if they come from the same class, each object may have different values for its properties. This makes the program more organized and reusable.
Constructor method
A constructor is a special method inside a class that runs automatically when a new object is created. Its main purpose is to initialize the properties of the object with values. When a programmer creates an object, the constructor helps in setting its initial data. For example, if a class represents a car, the constructor can assign values such as the car's name, color, or speed. This ensures that every object created from a class starts with the correct information. Constructors make object creation simple, organized, and efficient in JavaScript programming.
Methods inside a class
Methods are functions that are defined inside a class and describe actions that an object can perform. They allow objects to behave in certain ways based on their design. For example, if there is a class for a game character, methods might include actions such as running, jumping, or attacking. These methods are shared by all objects created from that class. This means that each object can perform the same actions but behave differently based on its data. Methods help organize behavior in programs and make code easier to read and maintain.
Basic idea of encapsulation
Encapsulation is an important concept in object-oriented programming. This means combining data and methods that operate on that data inside a single unit, which is usually a class. Encapsulation also helps protect data from being changed directly from outside the object. Instead, data is accessed in specific ways. This improves security and control of the program. For example, the balance in a bank account item should not be changed directly. Instead, methods such as deposits or withdrawals are used to modify it safely. This keeps the programs organized and reliable.
